peteread Posted September 25, 2004 Report Posted September 25, 2004 I have recently purchased a Galaxy 2.8 V6 Ghia X 4x4. After getting it serviced by fords (ouch) there was a not saying no prop shaft, I thought someone was having a laugh so I rang them n they said to my horror it had been removed. On hearing this I went and looked myself, yep, it wasn't there!!!Can ne1 tell me y wud someone remove the prop shaft???Does ne1 no of any probs wiv 4X4's? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted September 25, 2004 Report Posted September 25, 2004 See my reply to the other thread. Definitely suspicious and worth investigating with previous owner. Was car bought privately or from a trader? If trader, did they declare this as a known defect? If private seller, they should tell you what happened. Quote
Guest fredt Posted September 25, 2004 Report Posted September 25, 2004 Can ne1 tell me y wud someone remove the prop shaft???Does ne1 no of any probs wiv 4X4's? could have been removed for towing purposes? IIRC your not meant to tow them with the front wheels lifted, the 4wd system loads ups and can launch the vehicle! :D or the rear diff is U/S :D not a cheap replacement! although there is/was one up for grabs on Ebay! its still up for grabs! haldex rear diff Quote

Ivor_E_Tower Posted September 25, 2004 Report Posted September 25, 2004 The 4wd system should split the torque front to rear - if the rear propshaft is missing, what has been done to "fool" the system into thinking that x% is still going to the rear? Else the drive may all get diverted to the propshaft and none to the front wheels, so you don't go anywhere? Quote
Marky Posted September 25, 2004 Report Posted September 25, 2004 Give him a call...if he won't talk to you then you know he has blaggedyou, but remember...you know exactly where he lives and the chancesare he won't remember where you live.... :D Mark Quote

Else the drive may all get diverted to the propshaft and none to the front wheels, so you don't go anywhere? Ivor the 4wd system is primarily a fwd system till the loss of traction to the front wheels, power is only sent to the rear wheels when the front loose traction simply put, the rear diff only locks ups and provides drive when the fluid in it is heated and thickens, there are two sets of plates in the diff, the primary set driven by the power transfer shaft and the secondary set provide drive to the rear drive the axle, while both sets of plates spin at the same speed (both sets of wheels are spinning at the same speed) the fluid is cool and thin so no drive, when the primary plates spins faster than the secondary plates (the front wheels are spinning/loss of traction) the fluid warms up thickens and drive is provided to the rear wheels if the prop shaft is removed the diff in non the wiser to the loss of traction on the front wheels and the vehicle will drive just in 2wd/fwd as it normaly does till the loss of traction happens Quote
